Elephant Art

Elephants help the children…

The Maesa Elephant Camp in Chiang Mai was opened in 1976 to help raise awareness of elephants as the average population is going down by 2% per year in Thailand alone. The Maesa Camp began training the elephants and one of the greatest achievements was training the elephants to paint.

It was quickly discovered that Thai elephants had truly amazing artistic potential and were able to paint in both abstract and realistic styles.

These "trunk works" immediately won popularity with the tourists and the price of some elephant work went from a few hundred Baht to often over 10,000 Baht. The elephant's skills as artists became widely acknowledged and received glowing acclaim from both the domestic and international media.

Many of these paintings have gone on to be exhibited in art museums abroad, whilst Thailand itself has gone on to host two successful exhibitions of elephant art. Recently the Guinness book of records officially acknowledged one of the paintings of the Measa Elephant camp as being "the most expensive painting by a group of elephants" in February 2005.

Also the Measa elephants have an award from the Ripley's believe it or not museum (Thailand) for the largest painting created by a group of elephants.
